# Create a Vocabulary List

### Overview

In this article you'll see how to create a new Vocabulary List that you can use to [play the Flashcard Factory](https://help.peardeck.com/how-to-play-the-flashcard-factory) game. *Please note that Pear Deck Vocabulary and the Flashcard Factory are only available for users who log in with Google at this time.*

#### The Basic Steps

1. Log into Pear Deck with your Google account. You can go to peardeck.com and click on *Teacher Login.* Or [click here](https://app.peardeck.com/home/).
2. Click *Start a Vocab List.*

3. Now you have three different ways to add terms into your List. The rest of the article will explore these three options:

- Choose a pre-made List from Pear Deck
- Enter your own terms and definitions
- Paste in a list from somewhere else

**Choose a pre-made List from Pear Deck**

1. Click on the Menu Button in the top left corner of the screen.

2. Select *Find Vocabulary Lists.*

3. You'll be directed to the [Words to Know](https://www.peardeck.com/words-to-know) page. Scroll down to search for a list of terms based on grade level. Or, click *Create a List* to leave this page and go back to your Pear Deck Home.

4. If you click on a grade level, you'll be directed to a new page with instructions to create your own list with the terms. Scroll down to see and copy the terms (and definitions, if available) you want to use. Terms and definitions should be imported into the Pear Deck editor in two separate columns so they properly fill out the terms and definitions sections of the Vocabulary list.

5. Copy the terms and/or definitions you want to use. Then click *Open Vocab Editor*.

6. In the Vocabulary Editor, click *Import.*

7. In the new window, go to *Import a List* and paste the terms and definitions (if you have them) into the box. Each line creates another card. Press the enter key on your keyboard to start a separate line and a separate card. If you include definitions, they must be placed in a separate column. You can separate the columns with the tab key on your keyboard. The *List Preview* shows you how they will look in your Vocabulary List.

> Students will always be prompted to write an example sentence during the Flashcard Factory game. If you don't want students to see the definitions during the Flashcard Factory game, feel free to leave them off of your List! If you leave the Definition field blank, students will only see the term (no definition) during the game. They can then either write an example sentence or their own definition for these terms:

8. Click *Import List*.

9. Your Vocabulary List is ready! You can add definitions here too, either by typing them, or by clicking the *Definitions* button to search from Merriam Webster.

**Enter your own terms and definitions**

1. In the Vocabulary Editor, type your term into the *Term* field.
2. Click enter on your keyboard to jump to the *Definition* field.
3. Type your definition. Or, click *Definitions* to search for one from Merriam Webster. You can also leave the Definition field blank if you want students to define the term in their own words. Either way, students are prompted to write an example sentence during the Flashcard Factory game.

**Paste in a list from somewhere else**

If you have a list of terms in a spreadsheet, you can copy and paste it into the Pear Deck Vocabulary Editor.

1. Select the terms and definitions, from two different columns, and copy them.

You can separate the columns with the tab key on your keyboard. The *List Preview* shows you how they will look in your Vocabulary List.
